Some challenges facing the mobile gaming industry

by Katie marie

We indulge in the thrill of playing mobile phone games for varied reasons. We may be a casual gamer and want to spend a few minutes of leisure in playing them. Or, we may be serious gaming enthusiasts, taking on the challenges and tribulations of these games with our intelligence, adroitness and gaming skills. Whatever may be the reason, mobile phone games and mobile Java games have become popular with time. Some classic console games such as Pac Man have enjoyed a comeback in the form of downloadable mobile games.

However, the current state of the gaming industry is far from ideal and there remains a lot to be desired. According to experts and analysts, the mobile gaming industry is facing stagnation, with the demand for mobile games flattening out in diverse parts of the world. Actual figures show that only a small percentage of mobile phone users are downloading games to their handsets.

Game designers and developers are worried about the trends of falling prices of mobile phone games and an increase in the costs of designing and developing the same. In addition, some mobile network operators are planning to enhance their share of the revenue from downloadable mobile phone games.

After a careful analysis of the industry, four dampers have been identified which are responsible for these trends, which are capable of clouding the bright future of the business in mobile games.

• There are no clear rules defining the relationship between game publishers and game developers.

• Selection and downloading of mobile phone games often becomes a confusing and arduous task for mobile users.
• A number of games are available that are not quite up to the mark in terms of the quality of game play.

• Most mobile games available in the market are designed for one mobile user. To live up to consumer expectations, more and more games have to be designed that are interactive in nature and help to bring people together in an virtual and interesting environment of mobile phone gameplay.

Moreover, the “powers that be” need to concentrate on developing mobile phone games that do not fade in comparison to the games that can be played on gaming consoles. Moreover, the demand of network operators to add mobile phone games conforming to certain established standards of quality have to be understood in its proper context.

Mobile game developers should also understand the need for “one-button gameplay” among mobile phone users and gaming enthusiasts. This would make the gaming experience much simpler and more enjoyable and go a long way in establishing mobile phone games as a preferred choice among different types of downloadable mobile content.

In the present technological scenario, game publishers and developers have to work under the constraint of the availability of a large number of handsets of different makes and diverse technical specifications, at least for the time being. The way out for them is to develop different versions of the same game for different handsets with varied screen sizes, resolutions and memory capabilities. They would have to develop games in different formats, capable of running on different networks as well.

The challenges are tough; but the game developers and designers have no other option but to overcome them, if they want to maintain their position as one of the key players in the business of downloadable mobile content.
